Spectrometer for Luminance

SBM_1 is a spectrometer designed to measure the brightness of the monitors and flat displays.  It calculates the light power observed by the eye in candela/m2.  This cd/m2 unit is also known as Luminance.

On the market a 19” TFT flat monitor has a typical 300 cd/m2.  But this value is for the white color the monitor emits.  What will be the brightness of the dark colors, such as blue, green, and even black?  What will be the brightnesses at the edge and in the center of the monitor for one color, are they equal?
They are not! but why?

Therefore, this instrument is designed to respond to the questions above.  It contains a camera that displays continually 5 images/sec on a 2" TFT display, so that one can see the zone of the monitor the instrument is oriented to.  The instrument catches continually light and calculates it into cd/m2 and displays the value.  An Ultra-Sonic is also integrated to measure the distance between the instrument and the display.

An accurate measurement can be obtained when the instrument is at 50 cm from the monitor and at the normal surface of the monitor.  Thanks to the integrated Tilt switch and the photonics algorithm behind it.  A high-quality photodiode of Hamamtsu is integrated in the instrument.
